Behind the scenes at Diablo , the voice of Marius was performed by Frank Gorshin. He's an incredible actor who only improved with age after his most famous role as the Riddler in the Batman series — DC wants to include the Riddler in some new Batman content, but finding an actor that matches Gorshin's talent is a tall task.
His performance as Marius was equally superb if slightly less well-known. Gorshin brings out the tired, defeated aspect of Marius without being a bore to listen to. At the beginning of his story, Marius was just an old vagrant.
He'd been seeking shelter in a monastery when Diablo's hellspawn overwhelmed the citadel and he fled, along with many others who were seeking refuge. Diablo II details how he was trying to stay awake as much as he could after the monetary attack because it left him plagued by nightmares and visions whenever he slept. The ongoing Diablo e-book series entitled The Story of Diablo adds a detail to the story, describing how Marius was smoking opium at the time ironic, since opium is actually known to induce sleep.
Players of Diablo II become intimately familiar with Marius over the course of the game. He describes how he unwittingly followed Diablo on a journey to find Baal's soulstone, a gem meant to hold his demonic essence, before being charged by the angel, Tyrael, to travel to the Hellforge and destroy it there.
Despite having such an important role in Diablo II's story, it's worth noting that he has no dedicated character model in-game. Even the Dark Wanderer gets one, however brief that appearance may be. In Diablo II, Marius describes how he had to travel from the Tomb of Tal Rasha, where he acquired the soulstone, to Kurast, where a portal to hell created by the Prime Evils would allow him to reach the Hellforge. One look at a map of Sanctuary the mortal realm shows that Tal Rasha's tomb is in the Aranoch desert, and Kurast, the capital of Kehjistan, is across the twin seas.
One Redditor points out that Marius being able to manage this journey so quickly seems pretty unlikely, for a number of reasons already set in the lore - like how Jerhyn commanded all ships to be docked, and the first ship that did leave sped to Kurast, and yet Marius still managed to arrive first.
Unfortunately, Marius failed to enter Hell because he was so horrified by the sight of the three Prime Evils. He fled to Westmarch and began to go mad. As a result, he was arrested and locked up, confined to a sanitarium. Tell me Marius, how was it 'not your fault'? Marius watching the gathering of Prime Evils. Following Tyrael's instructions, Marius traveled to Kurast and gained entry to the Temple of Light There, in its depths , he found the three Prime Evils gathered, summoning the portal he had been instructed to go through.
He watched as the Wanderer lost what was left of his humanity, completing his transformation into Diablo , who passed through the gate into Hell. Having failed to enter Hell, Marius fled to Westmarch. There, driven to the brink of madness, he was arrested and confined to a sanitarium. His mind shattered, he carved the accounts of his experience into the floor of his cell with his own fingernails. One day, Marius received a cloaked visitor—Tyrael. Marius, consumed with guilt, related his account to the angel, [2] from the moment he first encountered the Dark Wanderer to his current position.
Tyrael assured him that all would be forgiven if he handed over the soulstone, an offer that Marius gladly accepted. What was less heartening was the revelation that his visitor in his cell was not Tyrael, but in actual fact, Baal. Marius broke into tears before Baal "rewarded" Marius for his service, killing him and setting the sanitarium ablaze. Why did you forsake me when you knew Baal still walked among us?
Marius's failure to ensure the destruction of Baal's soulstone would have dire ramifications for Sanctuary. Ultimately, Baal was defeated, but not before the corruption and subsequent destruction of the Worldstone. Marius's charred corpse still remained in the cell. Twenty years after his death, the Great Conflict came to a head, with a revived Diablo invading the High Heavens.
A vision of Marius was used by the Prime Evil to demoralize Tyrael. However, when the angel refused to kneel, the vision was replaced by one of Baal's lieutenants, whom Tyrael and his allies summarily defeated. Marius makes no appearance in the Diablo II game engine, but does serve as the game's narrator. When Tyrael successfully fights back the guilt, the vision is replaced by one of Baal's lieutenants, who attempts to stop Tyrael and the nephalem using more conventional means.
Available exclusively via Battle. Why is Diablo so addictive? For two reasons, the first is that you receive constant re enforcement for your actions. This may be that killing a monster allows you to advance just that bit further etc but this is a feature of most games that are addictive. The endgame is kinda whatever you want it to be. Your goal is to be able to run easily through T13 and complete some high Greater Rifts solo.
