I'm still quite unsure of "The right tank parameters", because everyone has a different opinion about that, but I'm trying to keep everything stable, and I'm using a suppliment that came with my tank that provides calcium and trace elements to the tank, however it lowers my pH, so I'm careful about doing it only once a week.
I've had the tank for a week now, but it was established for 6 months prior to my purchasing it and moving it, but it just needs time. I just worry that without coraline algae, the LR isn't doing it's part in the nitrogen cycle. Have you tested it? Alk is a buffer against the constant drag on pH many things in a tank will cause.
I test the Alk with both the red sea kit, which places the readings on a "high, normal, low" rating scale, with mine being towards the bottom of the "normal" catagory. I try to get my water tested at the LFS as frequently, but being in college without a car, it makes it quite difficult, so I've got to rely on friends taking me there. I've got Red Sea brand super buffer or something that comes with the test kit. Should I add some of that? I've got some coraline developing on the back wall, first it comes as a white slpoch, and then develops a purple coat.
I've been dosing one capful of Seachem Complete suppliment every wednesday and saturday for the past say 3 weeks. I should have some Ca Fasttests by the end of the week if things go well, so things are starting to look up. I have that red sea kit too. I was testing my ALK and it kept showing it in the very low zone. I was confused because my pH was fine.
I bought another test that read actual 's and it showed me that my ALK was fine. I don't know if the test kit is bad or whatever You can post now and register later. I Just redid my tank and have coraline starting all over the place after 3 weeks. Find More Posts by staninct. There is definitely some sort of white coraline like stuff, I have tons of it. I find coraline to be a mystery in my tanks.
I had a 15g nano that never really had any even after 2 years. My current 30g nano has too much. Both were kept in similar manner lighting as well so I have no clue why one was so good and the other had nothing. I'd like to hear some good info around this Find More Posts by thorsky. And stan What type of system do you have? Do you guys think that lighting has somthing to do with it?
I have a t5 system with 6 48 " bulbs my temp is 79, The ony thing that i have that I havenot hooked up yet is the cal reactor. Is liquid calcium that much different to the calcium from a reactor? Have a friend that has it growing in there tank scrape off a couple of pieces and put them in a bag of tank water ,then shut your main pump off and crush the coraline up and throw it in your tank let it settle and turn your pumps back on and in 1 to 2 months you will wish you didn't put it in your tank its a pain in the azz to scrape and clean the glass my tank is 7 months old and it's all over my tank i cant keep up with cleaning it I used Marco dry rock and seeded it with a piece of Fiji live rock.
Find More Posts by mark Mark your tank is beautiful, I just checked the link out. The problem is that Here in st thomas I think I am the only one who has a tank like like mine. I mean the only reef tank. I have a reef tank but haven't seen any signs of coraline algae growing. Is that good or is it worth investing in a product like purple up? I didn't find purple up to be helpful myself, what worked for me was adding coraline scrapings from Petco, one of the employees was helpful enough to scrape me some from their frag tank.
I'd be happy to scrape some for you, I'm sure other members would too, I'm sure you can find some nearby if you give us your location. Messages 1, Reaction score I just bought some of this.
TBD how well it works. Unlike many They allegedly bottle it the day they ship it because they said it dies in the bottle after about 14 days. The expiration dates on my bottles were in line. Chances are that there are spores allover and I don't really wanna put anything from that tank in my new tank except manly be one piece of rock. The coralline is spreading tho like wildfire in the biocube. Due to a surgery it's hard to maintain the biocube but I do my water changes etc. I should be healed tho by the time the new tank is cycled. Just wanna get a small piece of rock in the new tank that has coraline algae on it before any of the bad algae gets to it lol.
Right now I'm dosing the new tank from 1 ppm ammonia upto 4ppm. Every 24 hrs it's back to 1. Nitrites are starting to drop. I think I have a week maybe 2 left and I'll be cycled. By then I'll be able to walk again.
James Cochran. HI Ryan. Are you crazy? Please heed my advise this time to "Sit back and relax". The tank will cycle itself. You're only delaying the process by killing things providing further waste. And even if this was a freshwater environment you still have 1ppm of toxic ammonia your nitrifying bacteria has YET to convert to nitrite.
Stop putting ammonia in your water As to answer your question. If you has exisitng coraline algae in another tank it makes more sense to risk the hitchhikers from there, than the LFS. The hair algae should not be a concern because there's usually no nutrients in a new aquarium to spread it's growth.
But because you keep putting ammonia in the water I'm actually pretty sure you have high nitrate levels and you just keep killing stuff over and over. If you aqtually want to see coraline grow you'll need daily dosing actually. It's incredible how much of these elements it takes. I'd encourage you to add some of your old rock with corralline and rub the purple off with your fingers to help increase the spread.
It really helps to speed up the process. Once again stop dosing ammonia I don't recall the ammonia speech. Well maybe vaguely.
